Forge Your Agreements

The move by which a gathering makes its Field of Agreements: two to five commitments, spoken aloud and chosen together, that protect the trust everything else will rest on.

A Field of Agreements is the standing thing — what a body holds. Forging it is the act, and the act has its own moment: at the sealing, when a gathering chooses to become a Cell, and again at every turning afterward. It is done early because agreements assumed are not agreements; the whole value of the move is that the words were said out loud, in front of everyone, before anything depended on them.

Five hold most of what a first season needs. Presence — what we actually commit to attend, and what we do when we cannot. Truthfulness — that we say the real thing here, kindly (Speaking Truth In Love). Confidentiality — what said in this room stays in it, and what may travel. Consent — how we decide, and what a member does who cannot agree. Responsibility — that a word given is a word kept, or a gap named without blame (A word given is a word kept, Zero Blame Environment).

Two to five, and no more. A long charter is a document; a short list is something people can actually hold in their heads at the moment it matters, which is the only moment it matters. Write them in your own words rather than copying them; a borrowed sentence nobody argued about is not an agreement, it is furniture. Expect the forging to take a real conversation — the disagreement that surfaces while making the list is the cheapest disagreement the body will ever have.

Then re-forge at every turning. An agreement that is never revisited has quietly become a permanence nobody granted, and a season of lived experience is exactly what tells you which of the five was doing work and which was decoration. Renewing them is also how a body absorbs the people who joined after the sealing (Seal the Circle, Turn the Season).

What is forged here is also what makes a boundary possible: a body cannot hold a Selectively Permeable Membrane until it knows what it is holding.
