Forgiveness

The move that makes repair possible: releasing a debt so that relationship can be restored rather than merely settled.

Forgiveness is not the claim that no wrong occurred, and it is not the requirement that the wronged pretend otherwise. It is the decision to stop requiring payment — which is why it can only be given by the one who holds the debt, never demanded of them by anyone else, least of all by a Body that would prefer the matter closed.

It is the personal form of what the Way holds as justice. Justice here is Right Relationship restored rather than retribution delivered; the aim is repair of the relationship, not the balancing of harm with harm. Conflict Transformation and Reconciliation are the Body's instruments for the same work, and Jubilee is the same move made economic — periodic release, forgiveness, redistribution, so that debt cannot accumulate across generations into a permanent order.

Two limits keep it honest. Forgiveness is not a substitute for accountability: a steward who betrayed a mandate is still recalled, and a harm still calls for Remedy. And it is not owed on demand — a Body that pressures the wronged to forgive before repair has been offered has used a sacred move as a management technique, and has done a second wrong.

What makes it possible is usually what preceded it: a genuine Apologizing, the wrong named plainly, and a change that can be seen. Where those are absent, forgiveness can still be given — it belongs to the giver — but it costs more, and no one may require it.

At the table this is ordinary rather than dramatic. The gap between what was promised and what was done is met without blame, cause is sought in the set-up rather than the person, and the Body goes on. Most forgiveness is small, weekly, and unremarked.
