Reconciliation

The healing of a division through truth-telling and repair — the practice by which justice is actually done, since restoration and not punishment is the aim.

If Justice is the restoration of right relationship, reconciliation is how the restoring happens. It has a shape: the harm is named truthfully by the one who did it and the one who bore it; what can be repaired is repaired; what cannot be repaired is acknowledged rather than argued away; and the relationship is either resumed on new terms or ended cleanly. Forgiveness may come, and it belongs to the one harmed alone; it is never owed, never scheduled, and never a condition of the repair.

It is load-bearing because every body accumulates injury, and a body with no instrument for repair has only two outcomes: the injured leave, or the injury is buried and resurfaces as something else. Conflict itself is not the failure — every clash reveals an imbalance and invites a higher synthesis. The failure is a conflict that has nowhere to go. This is why a body carries a ladder: the tension is raised first between the two, then in the Circle, then at the home, then to elders or a wisdom council, and no higher than it needs to go.

In the Game, the smallest form is the tension mended at the table in the week it appears, before it hardens. The Turn makes room for it by design: what I have to offer, what I ask, what is in the way. In the System, reconciliation is the operative half of conflict transformation, and its formal cousins — arbitration, adjudication, restitution — exist for the cases the relational form cannot carry. At the scale of peoples it becomes truth and reconciliation: a body's honest reckoning with its own history, which the healing of the present depends on.

What reconciliation is not: the erasure of the record, the premature declaration of peace, or the requirement that a harmed person perform closure for the comfort of others.
