How A Pattern Enters The Language
The self-maintenance question: by what process does a new Pattern become canonical, an existing one improve, and an exhausted one retire — and who holds that judgment.
A living Language needs a door, a workshop, and a grave, and it needs them written down. The door: a Pattern is proposed because something was lived, and it is tested against the two filters — is this general rather than an application (General Pattern, Specific Application), and is it a Pattern rather than a container (Patterns And Containers)? The workshop: an existing Card deepens as practitioners feed back what the field taught them. The grave: a Pattern that no longer carries transmissible wisdom is retired rather than defended, which is The Triadic Discipline's third move applied to the Language itself.
Without a written process, the Language can only grow by whoever happens to be writing, and the canon's own honesty says so: this is named in the Language as a gap, alongside the question of who sits in judgment — a Pattern Council is named and nothing describes it. What exists in practice instead is the wider discipline: Patterns are validated by embodiment, not by assertion; what works is preserved, what fails is refined or retired.
The shape a written process would have to honor is already visible elsewhere. A change travels as a Proposal with its why and its source, it soaks before it binds, an objection names a harm rather than a preference (Meaningful Objection), and changes gather at a turning and land by The edition. What is missing is the application of that shape to the Language's own body.
Until it is written, the honest posture is the one the canon already takes: name the gap, keep the backlog visible, and let embodiment rather than argument decide.
