General Pattern, Specific Application
A Pattern is general; its applications are always specific. Articulate at the highest level of generality where the wisdom still holds; apply with full responsiveness to the actual context.
Two failures mirror each other. In the first, every specific application is written up as a new Pattern: the wisdom fragments into dozens of near-identical units, the Language swells, and the underlying unity disappears under the particulars. In the second, the general Pattern is applied as a formula — the same move, identically, everywhere — and it fails the moment it meets a context it was not shaped to fit.
The diagnostic, when in doubt: does this carry wisdom that cannot be derived from the general Pattern applied responsibly to this context? If yes, it is a Pattern. If no, it is an application, and it belongs inside the Pattern it applies.
The discipline does not weaken as scale increases. The Pattern at planetary scale is the same Pattern at the Self; the applications differ entirely. Recognizing the unity beneath the particulars is the trained being's competence; calibrating to the specific is the practitioner's craft. Both are required — the one without the other produces either a librarian who cannot act or an actor who cannot learn.
This is one of the drafted Cards, and it is a meta-Card: a Pattern about how Patterns work. It is the diagnostic by which the question is this a new Pattern or an application? is settled, and it is what keeps the Language operational as it grows. It composes with Patterns And Containers, which handles the other confusion, and with Shoshin, which keeps any articulation from hardening into the final word.
Applied to the whole Language, it is also the answer to the inventory of roughly five hundred and seventy-five named-but-unarticulated verb-coinages: most of them are applications waiting to be folded, not notes waiting to be sounded.
