Means
The actions, systems and methods by which an end is brought about — and which must be perfectly consistent with it, because the end is already inside them, as the fruit is already in the seed.
The argument is from seeds rather than from ethics, and that is what gives it force. Sow a seed and you do not get to choose the fruit; the fruit was in the DNA of what you planted. Means are the same. Whatever is used to build a thing is what the thing will be made of, so a good end reached by a bad road does not arrive — something else arrives wearing its name.
This closes off the oldest justification there is, and it closes it structurally rather than by prohibition. It is not that the end fails to justify the means because rule-breaking is wrong; it is that the end cannot justify the means, because the means are already producing a different end. Coercion used to build a free order builds an order that runs on coercion. Deception used to gather a truthful body gathers people who were deceived. Haste used to build something meant to last builds something that does not (Non-Violence · Truth · Consent · Integrity).
It is the same insight as Commander's Intent approached from the other side. Intent says: carry the why so you can choose rightly when the instructions run out. Means says: the how you choose is already part of the what. The parable the canon tells about a commander and a soldier is the point made as a story (The Commander And The Soldier).
In play it converts into a question that can be asked on a Tuesday. Not will this work but what would we be if this worked — because a body becomes whatever it practised on the way. Which is why the Game insists on consent where compliance would be faster, on invitation where recruitment would scale better, and on the slow seeding of Cells where a campaign would move sooner (The Invitation · Voluntary Association · Form a Cell · Design To The Goal · Spirit Precedes Pattern).

In play: every move — the second question after the compass question, asked of the method rather than of the aim

Open: The canon states the rule as absolute — all means must be perfectly consistent with the ends — while elsewhere allowing measured force in rare protective cases; nothing reconciles the two. · The root page names an Ends page that carries no treatment of its own.
