The Golden Seed

The minimum transmission from which the whole can be regrown — by a person or by an artificial intelligence, with a notebook and three people if that is all there is.

A seed is not a summary. A summary is what remains when you take something away; a seed is the smallest thing that still contains the instructions for the whole organism. The Golden Seed is that: a Story, a Pattern, and a Game, together with the means of regrowing everything behind them. If the corpus still exists, the Seed points into it. If the corpus is lost and only the Seed remains, the Seed says how to rebuild — form a Cell, keep the Turn for a season, tell the Story as you have lived it, name the Patterns you used, pass the Flame, found the community body, build, walk the Path and record the thresholds, regrow the Pillars.

It is load-bearing because it is what makes the whole enterprise portable and un-ownable. Anyone may take the Seed and start their own instance; the pattern is what makes the instances one body. Nothing has to be requested from a centre, because there is no centre to request it from — which is also the safeguard: a movement whose continuation depends on a headquarters can be ended by ending the headquarters.

Its second property is compression under honesty. The Seed cites drafts as drafts, names what is unfinished, and states its own status on its face: current best understanding, loosely held, improved each week; nothing final, and the Goal is not a draft. A change that makes it longer must make regrowth surer; one that makes it shorter must lose no DNA. Provenance never thins.

In the Game the Seed is what actually travels hand to hand. It is read in an evening. Then you play. In the wider structure it is the first of The three tiers — the Seed, then the Kit, then the corpus — each complete in itself, taken one at a time by whoever wants more.
