The Archetypal Guidebooks
One long book for each way of serving — Warrior, Healer, Steward, Storyteller, Cook, Midwife, Witness, Guardian, Builder, Teacher, Cosmic Diplomat, Elder — each gathering the Patterns of that way into a whole that can be walked.
An Archetype is a shape of service that recurs across every people: somebody guards, somebody heals, somebody feeds, somebody remembers, somebody builds, somebody sits with the dying. A guidebook is that shape written out at length — not a list of the Patterns a Warrior or a Healer uses, but the arc of becoming one, composed so that a person can walk it rather than consult it.
In the music of the Language this is the level called a song: an extended composition that develops a theme across many notes and riffs and carries a beginning, a deepening, a turning and a return (Notes, Riffs, Songs, And The Symphony). A person who has the Cards has the vocabulary; a person who has walked a guidebook has the literature. That is what the level is for, and why the twelve are held as one of the corpus's larger unfinished works.
They matter because a Pattern alone does not teach a life. Martial Cultivation tells a Warrior what to train; it does not say what the first three years feel like, where practitioners reliably go wrong, what the teacher is looking for at each stage, or how the whole thing sits inside the rest of a person. Sequence, proportion and the shape of a decade are what a guidebook carries and a Card cannot (Mastery, Shu-ha-ri, Belt Progression, Apprenticeship).
Their honest state is that one is being written and eleven are a list. The canon says this plainly rather than implying otherwise, and the gap is worth naming because so much else points here: several Pattern Cards defer their timing, progression and lineage questions to a guidebook, and every Card's record of the Plays that invoke it is marked as waiting on the guidebooks maturing. Whoever writes the others will write them the way the first is being written — by having walked one (Gaps Not Yet Closed, Guild, Keepers Of The Way).

Open: Eleven of the twelve exist only as names on a list. · The twelve are given once, with and possibly more; nothing says what makes an Archetype one of them or who decides. · Several written Cards cite a Warrior guidebook as the canonical holder of their timings; that guidebook is cited more often than it is written.
