Apprenticeship

Learning through humble service, observation, and co-creation beside someone who can already do the thing.

Most of what matters in any craft cannot be written down. It lives in judgement — when to push, when to wait, what "good enough" looks like from the inside, what the small wrongness in the room means. That knowledge transfers by proximity and repetition, not by instruction: you stand next to someone doing real work, you do the humble parts, you watch what they attend to, and over time you find yourself attending to it too. This is why apprenticeship survives every attempt to replace it with a course.

Three features make it work, and dropping any one turns it into something weaker. Real work with real consequences — an apprentice does not practise on exercises, they do the actual thing at the edge of their competence while someone who can catch the fall stands close. Service — the apprentice takes on the unglamorous parts, which is not hazing but the fastest route into the craft's actual conditions. Relationship — the elder knows this particular learner, which is what makes The Zone Of Optimum Development possible at all; a stranger cannot pitch the next task right.

It carries obligations in both directions. The elder owes honesty, patience, and eventually the handing over of the work — an apprenticeship that never ends is a dependency, and Term Limits And Rotation applies to teachers too. The apprentice owes attention and the willingness to be corrected. And both owe the next one: the craft is passed on or it dies with its holders, which is the same law as Pass The Flame in another register.

In the Game the form is ordinary. Two people host each season and the hosting passes around, so everyone learns to hold the table by holding it beside someone who has. A Guild does at a larger scale what a Circle does at a small one, and Wise Eldership names where the judgement sits while it is being handed over.
