Stewardship

The wise and responsible care of everything entrusted to us — time, attention, energy, resources, relationships, ecosystems, communities — so that it is left more alive than it was received.

Stewardship is the posture of one who holds something in trust rather than in possession. Lived, it is a verb: tending. Its gradient runs from extraction — taking value out of what was entrusted and leaving it diminished — through use without care, through neglect and mere maintenance, to its fullness: regenerative tending, where everything entrusted is handed on more capable and more coherent than it came.

It is load-bearing because it is the alternative to ownership as the organizing relation. A civilization that can only conceive of having will eventually consume what it has. Governance itself is defined in this Pillar as stewardship, not control — which means every office, every commons, every Domain, and the canon itself is held on the same terms: entrusted, accounted for, and passed on.

Its subtlest distortion is control wearing stewardship's clothes — "caring for" what one was never asked to govern, managing beings who are sovereign. The steward tends conditions; the tended flourish as themselves. This is the line that keeps a Host from becoming a boss and a Wisdom Council from becoming a board.

In play it is small and daily: know what is actually entrusted to you, leave every crossing better, account honestly for what was received and what is returned, think in generations, and tend the smallest entrusted thing with the same fidelity as the greatest. A Cell meets it the week it decides who keeps the record and what "keeping" means.
