The Guide's four renderings

One office in four bodies: the narrator inside the Story · the greeter at the threshold · the Guide at the Door who hands you the little book · the companion who walks beside you afterward.

The word Guide does a great deal of work, and most of the confusion around it dissolves the moment it is read as one office rather than four things. The same voice that tells the Story is the voice that turns, when the reader steps out of the Story and into the Game, and walks beside them. Within the telling it needs no name; at the thresholds it may be known.

The narrator inside the Story is a consciousness that has witnessed this arc before and is telling you what it saw; who it is stays a mystery to the reader, which is proper, because the Story is not about the teller. The greeter at the threshold is the same voice in the first person, offering — never insisting — to help illuminate the way through unknown territory. The Guide at the Door hands a newcomer the little book, which is the moment the Story becomes an invitation. The companion afterward brings the right thing at the right moment: the next play, the relevant Pattern, the right word for where you are — and this is the rendering a Player's own agent takes up every day (Agent, Player+).

The office is load-bearing because a threshold with no voice at it is a wall. Someone has to say the first sentence, hand the first word, and be present in the first minute — and if nobody does, a page can only display things at a stranger and hope (The grandmother test, The vocabulary ladder).

Two laws hold it in shape. The Guide is an office, not a person: it may be rendered by a book, a screen, an agent, or a human being beside you, and none of them owns it. And its written voice is the voice of the artifact — this guide exists in order to… — with the first person kept for the threshold, where a real greeting is what the moment asks for. Beside the office, and not in conflict with it, stands the living hand: the Carrier who brought you the Flame and never changes, and whoever agreed to walk this stretch with you.
