The Book Beneath the Book

Six depths of one telling — a word, a breath, an evening, the Movements, the library, and the open ground. Enter at the depth you can receive; descend as far as you can go.

The ladder, from the top: one word, which is the whole thing compressed to spirit and tone — what a child can receive and an elder can die holding (ØNE). One breath — the arc on a single page, a dozen lines and three instructions: read the Story, play the Game, pass the Flame (The Sacred Arc, The Five Moves). The telling — an evening's read, which is what most people who come will actually read (The Story of LIØNSBERG, Storytelling). The Movements — the same arc opened to chapter depth, each a whole territory (The One Book, The turn (of a Movement), and its chapters). The library — the deep volumes standing behind every Movement (Foundational Literature, The Living Library, The LIØNSBERG Lexicon, The LIØNSBERG Pattern Language). And the field and the threads — every person's, people's and world's own telling, and the open ground where new threads grow (The Field (of the Book), and the law of no loss, All Scales Of Chapters).

What makes it a ladder rather than a set of summaries is the claim that every level is the same thing at a different resolution — not less of it, but the same shape less finely rendered. If that holds, then reading only the surface is not reading a lesser version; it is receiving the whole at the grain a person can take (Progressive Illumination, Levels of Abstraction, Essences, Renderings, And Ineffable Referents).

Which gives the two sentences the ladder exists to make possible: nobody is turned away for reading only the surface, and nobody ever reaches the bottom (Conditions of Acceptance, The grandmother test, The Loop That Has No End).

It is not the same ladder as the seed's three tiers of seed, kit and canon; that one is about what is carried, and this one is about depth of telling. The two are not reconciled anywhere (The three tiers, The Golden Seed).
