The pace of trust

Roots before branches. A Circle forms, and a flame passes, only as fast as trust actually grows — never faster.

The same phrase governs three different moments, which is why it is a law of the Game rather than an image.

Forming. Gather the few you already trust. Take your time before you seal the Circle — share your stories, name your gifts and the places you are still growing, learn who you are together before deciding what you will do together. Only then seal it with a name, a few agreements and a first Quest.

Growing. A Circle that knows and trusts itself can bear great weather. That inner stability is what lets a real Quest be carried, what lets hard things be said at the table, and what makes everything downstream possible at all.

Spreading. The flame passes at the pace of trust, never faster — and it always passes. Hand to hand, to the two or three who are ready, and not by broadcast.

The image beneath it is a tree: a Circle is a miniature tree of life springing from the Seed, and the deeper the roots, the higher it can safely grow. Grow roots first, then trunk, then branches, so that when the season of blossoming comes the tree can bear it. A tree forced upward falls in the first real weather.

What the rule actually defends against is the failure mode of every good movement: growth outrunning the relationships that carry it, so that a body arrives at scale with nothing holding it together and breaks under the first disagreement. Trust cannot be accelerated by urgency, by a deadline, or by how right the thing is — it accrues at the speed of shared time and kept promises, and any structure built faster than that is borrowing against relationships that do not exist yet.

It also sets the correct measure of haste. Play with urgency, rest with intention is not in tension with this; the urgency belongs to the work, and the pace belongs to the bonds.
