The Microlocality

About a thousand sovereigns — a cluster of Villages still held in direct relation across a small territory.

Above the Village and below the Community lies the scale of the clan, the parish, the small town: several Villages whose people meet at the same market, cross the same bridge, and share the same weather. Nobody here knows everybody any more, but everybody knows somebody in every Village, and that second-degree knowing is enough to carry shared work (Levels Of Scale).

It matters because it is the first rung where coordination must be deliberate. A Microlocality cannot be run by acquaintance, and it is far too small to need anything heavy: it is where written agreements, a named way of deciding, and a page that travels start to earn their keep (Field of Agreements, Consent-Based Decision-Making, The Season Sheet). The structures learned here are the ones that scale; skipped here, they are improvised badly at ten thousand.

In the ladder it is one order of magnitude up from the Village and one down from the Community, and it holds, in the canon's phrase, a cluster of Villages in direct relation. Like every rung it is at once a Domain, a body composed of the bodies below it, and a part of the body above (The Two-Stake Principle, Holofractal Scaling).
