The Parasite
The ninth disease: what feeds on the commons without contributing to it — and, at the door of every commons, showing up to drain it rather than to build it.
A parasite is not someone who receives more than they give in a season. Bodies carry their members through illness, grief, formation, and old age, and that is what a Body is for. The mark is the orientation: arriving at a commons for what can be taken from it, with no intention of putting anything back, and structuring the relationship so that the taking can continue.
The Pattern is unusually exposed to it. A door that is open, agreements entered by trust, value held in common, and no enforcement apparatus — every one of those is a strength and every one is an opening. A Body that meets this by closing the door has cured the disease by becoming something else.
What holds instead is visibility and record. Contribution is recorded and never retracted, so what each has actually put in is known without anyone policing it (Proof-of-contribution). Value flows in a stated order (The waterfall), so taking out of turn is visible rather than arguable. The asset lock means no one can extract more than they put in plus honest pay, and the body cannot be bought or cashed out. The Offering is put in the middle of the table each week by each person, freely and in their own measure — a commons whose feeding is public is hard to farm quietly.
The canon names the disease at two scales: a person or interest feeding on a shared thing, and the older inverted pattern that feeds on life itself — the extractive arrangement dressed as provision. The same test reaches both: does this increase the life of the whole it draws from, or reduce it?
