Reciprocity
Mutual, life-enhancing exchange between beings in right relationship — the principle that what flows one way must, in some form and in some time, flow back.
Reciprocity is not a rule of equal accounting. It is the recognition that every party in a living system both gives and receives, and that any arrangement where one party only gives or only takes is dying, whether or not the books balance. Blood does not accumulate in one organ. A forest returns to the soil what it drew from it. The pattern is older than economics and does not depend on anyone keeping score.
It differs from both of the modes it governs. Exchange is immediate and specific: this for that, now, between these two. Gift is open: this, freely, and nothing asked. Reciprocity is the field both sit inside — the expectation, held loosely and over long time, that a body which receives will also give, and that giving into it is therefore not a loss. This is what makes a Commons work where a purely gift arrangement would be drained and a purely transactional one would never form. It is also what keeps help from hardening into charity: the one helped this season is the one helping next, and both know it.
The word is invoked across the Pattern more than almost any other in this Pillar, and usually as a test. Is this exchange reciprocal, or is one side absorbing the cost? Does this federation give as much as it asks of its members? Does this arrangement with the land return what it takes? Kinship extends the test past the human: reciprocity with soil, water, forest, and the generations not yet born, none of whom can negotiate.
At a table it is concrete. Each week every player says what they have to offer and what they ask. Over a season the two lines come near enough to even that no one is quietly carrying the Circle and no one is quietly carried. That is the whole mechanism, and it is visible to everyone present.
