The Time Horizons

The natural scales at which a walk is measured — first minute, first hour, first day, first week, first season, first year, and onward to eternity.

Where the stages of the Path say what unfolds, the horizons say when — and they are permissive, not prescriptive. Some walk in days what others walk in seasons. The horizons describe the natural shape of the walk for most who carry it through, and are a map of expectation rather than a schedule to be met.

Their shape: the first minute is recognition — the Seed arrives through someone trusted, and it either resonates or it does not; there is no other test. The first hour is orientation and a practical decision, the beginning of the list of two or three. The first day is seed-planting, and the day the daily practice can begin, before any Circle exists. The first week is gathering: three to thirteen people, ninety minutes, the Circle consecrated, the first Quest chosen, the rhythm set, and each person naming the two or three they will invite. The first month establishes the rhythm and the first real patterns are reached for because real questions have surfaced. The first season bears fruit: one Quest completed or honestly retrospected before the next turning. The first year is stable practice — four seasons, sub-Circles spawned, a community beginning to form — and identity has shifted.

They are load-bearing because they set expectations that would otherwise be set by hope. A person who thinks the first week should produce a movement will quit in the second; a person who knows the first year is four Quests and one shifted identity can recognize progress when it is happening. They also make the Path measurable without making it a schedule: a body can ask honestly which horizon it is in.

Beyond the first year the scales lengthen and thin: first decade, first lifetime, first generation, eternity. That is where the written treatment stops and the long scales become ore.
