The de-concentration of stewardship

A plan that permits no single point of failure, naming the one place it is presently violated — its own stewardship — and setting the hour at which that ends.

Every movement that has ever mattered has had this problem and most have refused to say it. A body built on distributed sovereignty is, at its beginning, held together by a very small number of hands: the canon is tended by them, the planning function runs through them, the treasury path passes them, the instruments are theirs. That is not hypocrisy — early on there is no one else — but left unnamed it hardens into the thing the body exists to refuse (Centralization Of Power, Institutional Idolatry).

The discipline is to say it plainly and to put a trigger on it. The nomination of the planning group by the first Co-Creators is named for what it actually is: the beginning of the deliberate distribution of stewardship itself — of the canon, of the coordinating function, of the treasury path, of the instruments — out of any one pair of hands and into the arrayed body (The System Wide Master Planning Group and Process, The Calling of the Ecclesia). Until that day, continuity of every key and every duty is held redundantly, so that the Pattern never again depends on a single life.

Two things make this more than a promise. The first is that the trigger is structural rather than temporal — it fires when a threshold of people stand, not when a founder feels ready, which is precisely the decision founders are worst at making. The second is that the acceptance test is stated as a loss: if every instrument of the centre vanished tonight, the body continues. That is the design, and it is also the test — and a body that could not survive the disappearance of its stewards has not yet de-concentrated anything, whatever its charter says.
