LIØNSBERG Mission Control

The room you walk into at the headquarters of Worksite Earth — the big room of the whole, which every Cell keeps a smaller version of: the plan on the wall, the specifications on the table, the tools on the rack, and doors anyone may walk to.

A movement with no centre still needs a place where the state of the whole is visible, or every body plans blind. The answer is a room rather than an office: a surface that shows what is true right now, tended at every weekly turn and every seasonal turning so that nothing hanging in it is stale. It coordinates; it does not command. No centre but the source — this is a room, not a ruler.

On the wall, the plan of the whole: The Goal at the top, the markers beneath it with lateness shown rather than hidden, the work breakdown whose first level is the twelve Pillars, this season's critical path in numbered steps, and The Score the Game actually keeps — time and energy and attention invested, commitments kept, value created, stories shared, flames passed. The guidance runs both ways, which is what keeps it from becoming a headquarters. Any Cell may ask the whole; the whole may ask the arrayed body in turn. Each Cell broadcasts its position, its condition, its offers and requests, and its Quests upward; the plan is broadcast back down. The function stewards only what a shared function must hold — chiefly the submittal and continuous-improvement path by which one locality's best solution enters the common kit and every locality inherits the learning of all (Polycentric Implementation of Shared Solutions). And the function itself is scheduled to disperse: from the tenth cycle's nomination onward its stewardship distributes progressively into the called-out body (The de-concentration of stewardship).

Its most unusual feature is the registry — a line for every part of the whole and where that part actually stands, including the parts that do not exist yet: specified in part; nothing built · a name; the door to build · drafted; run first by one dyad. A status board that admits its own holes is the rarest thing in any programme, and it is the reason this room can be trusted about the things it says are finished.
