Biodiversity

The variety of life that makes a system able to survive what it did not predict — and, in this Pillar, a variety held as sacred in itself.

Two claims are made at once and both are meant. The instrumental claim: variety is what enables resilience, because a system with many ways of doing each job survives the loss of any one of them, while a monoculture is efficient right up until the season it is not. The intrinsic claim: each species has value and a role in the great order regardless of what it does for anyone, which is why the canon says biodiversity is sacred rather than merely useful. A system defended only on the first claim will be traded away the moment someone produces a better efficiency argument.

It is load-bearing because the same logic governs human bodies as governs ecosystems. Meta Unity of Meta Diversity, Navigating Difference, and the refusal to impose one form on every place are the social form of the same principle: a Community that has flattened its difference has also flattened its capacity to meet what it did not expect. Redundancy is not waste; it is the price of continuing. This is why the Prototype is localized and honestly compromised in each place rather than replicated identically, and why Cross-Cultural Pattern Translation is a discipline rather than a courtesy.

In play, biodiversity is countable and therefore checkable. A Cell stewarding a place can measure it — species present, pollinators, soil life, seed varieties held — and a seasonal Quest can move the number. Seed sovereignty, hedgerows, uncut edges, and the refusal to sterilize ground are ordinary work. At Ecoregion scale it is the substrate that federation exists to steward.

The canon lists it among the named material commons of the Meta Project, beside Air · Water · Soil · Microbiome — the things every body of people inherits, holds in trust, and can degrade beyond recovery within a single generation.
