Living System
Any coherent, self-regulating, dynamic whole made of interrelated living parts — and, in the largest reading, the total system of systems that creates and sustains life.
The term works at every scale without changing meaning. A cell is one. A body is one. A Cell of people is one. A forest, a Watershed, a Community, a Bioregion, Earth, and the Cosmos are each one, and each is a part of the next. In religious language the largest reading is all Creation; in the canon's language, the Universe and each of the All are interrelated living systems. This is the same claim Holarchy makes about structure, stated in the vocabulary of life.
It is load-bearing because it decides what kind of thing a body of people is, and therefore how it may be treated. A machine is assembled, optimized part by part, and repaired by replacement. A living system is grown, optimized only as a whole, and killed by the removal of what looked redundant. Every structural commitment in the Pattern follows from choosing the second: Subsidiarity because living systems regulate locally, Biodiversity and redundancy because resilience is not waste, Emergence because the behaviour is not in the parts, discrete birth and discrete death because organisms end rather than being maintained forever.
In play the reading is a diagnostic. When something is failing, ask whether it is being treated as a machine — a person managed, a Circle restructured from outside, a place optimized for one output, a commons audited into compliance. The correction is usually to tend conditions rather than to intervene in parts, which is precisely what Stewardship means: the steward tends conditions; the tended flourish as themselves.
The frame also sets the limits of the analogy. A living system can be killed, and it does not owe anyone its survival. Calling a movement a living system is a design commitment, not a promise that it will live.
