The four substrates every living thing is made of and depends on — named together as the material Commons of the whole Meta Project.
They are grouped because they behave as one system. Soil holds water; water carries what the air deposits; the microbiome is what makes soil alive and what makes a gut work; and the air is breathed by everything. Degrade any one and the others follow within a generation. They are also the clearest case of a commons in the strict sense: nobody made them, everybody depends on them, they cross every boundary, and they can be ruined by acts that are individually rational.
They are load-bearing because they are the floor under the Vision the whole work is aimed at: air, water, and soil pure; children safe and nourished; nothing wasted, everything alive. No being is truly well in a sick place — water must be pure, soil must be alive, and air must be clean for any body to thrive — which makes these four a health matter under Pillar V — Sacred Health and Wellness as directly as an ecological one. They are the point where Wellness and Ecology stop being two subjects.
In play they are what a place-based Quest most often touches, and what makes such a Quest checkable. Soil life can be measured. Water can be tested at a known point on a known stream. Air can be sampled. A Cell that says it has improved its place can show the numbers, and the numbers belong on The Season Sheet as honestly as Kept as a share of made does. Compost builds soil, Permaculture catches water, Biodiversity tends the living part of all of it.
The microbiome is the newest of the four in common understanding and the least intuitive: most of the cells carried in a human body are not human, and most of the fertility of a field is not visible. Both facts undercut the picture of a bounded individual, which is why the canon keeps the four together rather than treating soil chemistry and gut health as separate topics.
