Mass mortality at the base of the living web climbing upward into us — read as a precursor rather than as a sentiment about nature.

The observation is ordinary ecology and the naming is what this adds. Losses at the bottom of a food web do not stay at the bottom. The pathways are specific and each is checkable. Food-chain disruption — what eats the insects goes next, and then what eats that. Pollination — a large share of what people eat depends on it. Soil fertility — much of it is made by things too small to notice, and it is not replaced on any timescale that helps. Water purification, done for free by intact systems and very expensively otherwise. Disease control — some of what is disappearing was holding down what carries disease. Conflict, as scarcity does what scarcity does. And feedback, each loss making the next easier (Biodiversity, Air · Water · Soil · Microbiome, Living System, Ecology, Permaculture).

Why the name is worth keeping is the direction it insists on. The usual framing treats biodiversity as a matter of what a civilisation should care about — a value question, arguable. This treats it as a question about load-bearing infrastructure, which is a different kind of question with a different kind of answer (Infrastructure, Limiting Factor, Systemic Failure Modes).

And it changes what the observation is for. A decline at the base is not primarily a loss to mourn; it is an instrument reading about the condition of something everything else stands on — the canary rather than the tragedy, and the appropriate response is diagnostic rather than elegiac (The Dashboard of Civilization, Pain (as signal), Grief, Reverence).

On the numbers. The source's figure comes from a 2023 dialogue with an AI assistant; a later chapter in another book restates the decline with different figures from 2026. These are different measurements of different things over different regions, they are estimates, and they should not be blended into one number (We Do Not Know, Honesty about time, Measurement).

What a Cell can do with it is local and unglamorous: the base of a web is exactly the part that responds to what happens on one piece of ground (Individual And Local, Regeneration, Commons-Tending, Watershed).
