Cell of Cells

The composing move: Cells that hold a card of the same shape as the Cells beneath them.

Everything in the system is a Player holding one card, and the card does not change shape as the body grows. A person holds one; a Cell holds one; a Cell of Cells holds one; so does a community, and so does a world (The Player, The Playcard). Its upper half arrives from above and is the same on every card of the Game; its lower half is the body's own, filled at each Turn. Read downward, a card opens onto the cards beneath it; read upward, onto The plan of the whole.

This is what makes composition cheap. A new rung needs no new institution, no new vocabulary, and no new form — only Cells that have become one another's home, and one more evening in the season (Supercell, Home Cell). The same five functions that make a Cell complete are what a Cell of Cells must also hold at its own size, or it is a committee rather than a body: it governs itself, sustains itself, forms its people, carries a purpose of its own, and plants new bodies (Self-Sustenance and Self-Replication).

The phrase is the older, general name for the move; supercell is the word now used at the table for the body it produces, and subcells for what lies beneath. The corpus also reaches for the same idea as Circle of Circles, Community of Communities, and Team of Teams. They are one pattern said four ways: complete wholes federating from the bottom up, each keeping its sovereignty (Holofractal Omnifederation, Holofractal Scaling).
