Organizational Development System

The system by which a body grows itself — as distinct from the system by which it does its work.

Most bodies have a way of delivering and no way of developing. They get better at what they already do and never at being what they are; when they need to change shape, they reorganise in a crisis, from the top, by rearrangement. An organizational development system is the alternative: a standing, ordinary practice for growing the body's own capability, structure and culture, run at the same rhythm as everything else.

It works on four things rather than one. People — what each person is growing into, and at what stretch (The Zone Of Optimum Development · Apprenticeship · Belt Progression · Cohort-Learning · Mastery). Roles — what work exists, who holds it, how it is handed on and how it ends (Roles · Size of role, size of person · Term Limits And Rotation · Delegation). Structure — how the body is arranged, and the fact that the arrangement is itself a draft (Organizations The LIØNSBERG Way · Stewardship body · Phase-Gated Architecture). Culture — the way of being that actually governs conduct when no rule applies (Culture · Embodying the Way · Field of Agreements).

What makes it a system rather than good intentions is that it runs on its own loop. Something is noticed, a change is proposed, tried small, assessed against what was expected, and either adopted as the new normal or revised (Attend, Plan, Act, Learn, Improve Cycle · Continuous Improvement · Proposal · Retrospective · OmniSpection). Its subject is simply the body itself rather than the body's output.

And it is the mechanism behind replication. A Cell that can develop itself can form and grow another; one that cannot must be built each time by whoever built the first (Self-Sustenance and Self-Replication · Grow Your Cells · Midwife a New Circle · Guide Cells · Pass The Flame).
