Praxis

The inseparable union and reciprocal unfolding of inner knowing and outer embodied action.

Praxis names the fact that knowing and doing are one motion, not two stages. The usual picture has a person learn a thing and then apply it; praxis says the application is where the learning actually occurs, and that what is understood before acting is a sketch of understanding rather than the thing itself. To know the Way, one must live it. This is not a poetic flourish but a claim about how comprehension works: the act reveals what the idea could not, and the revised idea changes the next act.

It cuts both ways, which is the reciprocity in the definition. Action without reflection is repetition — a person can do a thing for twenty years and learn almost nothing from it, because nothing ever came back. Reflection without action is commentary, which can be elaborate and stay permanently untested. Praxis is the loop closed: act, look honestly at what happened, adjust, act again. Tightly Coupled Learning and Action is the same loop named at the scale of a body; Attend, Plan, Act, Learn, Improve Cycle is its stated form; Retrospective is where a Circle closes it each week.

The reciprocal opening runs deeper than technique. Practice changes the practitioner — what one is capable of doing alters what one is capable of seeing, and what one has come to see alters what one is able to do. This is why Mastery is a matter of character and not only of competence, and why a body that wants a particular kind of person does not lecture them into existence but gives them work of the right kind.

For a Cell, praxis is the weekly form of the Game itself: say what you will do, do what you said, learn from the gap. The gap is where the learning lives. A week with no gap taught nothing, either because nothing was attempted or because nobody looked.
