Protection Of Children

What a body owes the young who did not choose it — a named gap, stated plainly, in a Pattern that says a civilization is made of the formation of its young.

Children are the one class of member who arrive without consenting, cannot leave, and are formed by whatever the body happens to be while they are in it. Everything the Pattern says about sovereignty, consent, and the freedom to walk away is qualified here, and the qualification is not a detail. A body's real character is legible in how it treats those who have no power to hold it accountable.

It is load-bearing because formation is the mechanism. Form people, and people form organizations — the sixth element — runs through childhood first; three years of formation is asked of each adult who comes, and eighteen or so of every child who is born into it. A movement that gets its governance right and its children wrong will have built the wrong thing within one generation, and will not find out until it is too late to fix cheaply.

In the Game, the floor that already applies is the one that applies to everyone: when a member is in danger, in body or in mind, the Circle acts first and records later, and no card is more important than the person at the table. A child at the table is a member of it. In the System, the open questions are specific and unanswered: what standing children hold in a body's decisions and at what ages; who speaks for a child when the adults of a household disagree; what a Cell does when the danger to a child is inside the Cell; and what boundary separates the formation a community offers from the formation a family holds.

This is written down as a significant gap, and the naming is honest rather than apologetic. A civilization is made of the formation of its young is the observation; the seven-year arcs, children's standing, multi-adult parenting, the sacred child, and the children's curriculum are all listed as patterns needed, and none has been written.
