The Nets

Energy · Water · Information · Safety — the four shared utilities no community can provide for itself alone, and none can flourish without.

Every community of life needs power, clean water, trustworthy information, and enough safety to cooperate at all. These four are named together because they behave the same way: each is a network rather than a possession, each is worth far more interconnected than isolated, and each is a precondition for everything above it. A place without them cannot develop, however willing its people (Infrastructure, Shared Services, Infrastructure, and Support, Commons).

The Energy Net. Just as a distributed network of nodes was built to create and exchange information, one can be built to create and exchange power. Interconnection is the point: half the world is always asleep, so a connected network of generating nodes gains enormously in efficiency and in resilience over the same nodes standing alone (Energy, Anti-Fragility, Technology).

The Water Net. Clean water, universally. The canon's note on it is bleak and worth keeping: pollution has reached the rain itself, before it has touched the ground (Air · Water · Soil · Microbiome, Regeneration, Watershed).

The Info Net. The connection is arriving for billions; the content flowing through it is, in the canon's word, polluted. Access without trustworthiness is not a utility but a hazard (Control Of Information, Navigating Towards Truth, Data, The open web).

The Security Net. Enough basic safety that a community can cooperate. Nothing can be built where people live in daily fear, and the canon's emphasis is on visibility, transparency and accountability at a human scale rather than on force (Guardianship, Protection Of Children, Peace, Justice).

They are load-bearing as a set because they mark where a community must federate. Each is beyond what one locality can build alone and beneath what any centre should own — which is exactly the shape that federation exists for (Federation, Subsidiarity, Equal Opportunity For All, The Platform (civic)).
