Seats at the Table

Consent answers how a decision is made; this answers the prior question — who is in the room when it is made.

Four seats, and the first one is the bedrock: one member, one voice. No seat outweighs another by money, seniority or standing. Nothing that follows overturns that; what follows only widens who counts as having a voice at all.

The Members — the people who have consented to the Field of Agreements, each one voice. A Seat for Living Systems — the land, the watershed, the soil, the non-human kin the body's choices reach. A Seat for Future Generations — those not yet born, who inherit what is built or broken. A Seat for the Whole — the wider body this one is a cell of.

The mechanism is what makes it more than sentiment. Each of the three widened seats is held in trust by a named member, charged to speak for what cannot speak and to put one question to every weighty decision: what would this do to the living world we depend on? · would the people seven generations from now thank us or curse us? · does this serve the wider Whole, or only us? The river does not get a vote it cannot cast; it gets a human voice sworn to represent it. A named holder can be asked to speak before the room closes a decision, and can be held to the charge afterward — which is precisely what a general commitment to "all generations of life" cannot do.

Not every seat need be filled on the first day. Name them in the Charter and fill them as the body matures. A table that seats only its present members will, in time, serve only its present members — and that is not a moral failing so much as a structural one: a room decides for whoever is in it.

The Seat for the Whole is the one most easily mistaken for control. It carries no ownership and cannot override the body's Sovereignty. It is the living reminder, present at the table, that Union was chosen over isolation — and it is answered by a reciprocal seat the Whole grants in return.
