Shield
A protective boundary held on purpose — around a life, an energy, a truth, or a body of people under load.
A shield is what is placed between something vulnerable and what would reach it. The word covers the physical, the social, and the energetic, and the canon treats them as one family because the discipline is the same: something is deliberately kept out, by someone who has decided to hold the line, for as long as it needs holding.
Its social form is the plainest. A person under attack, a newcomer who has not yet found their feet, a member in crisis — each is shielded by others standing between them and the pressure. In a body this is shared rather than individual: shared shielding under load means the weight of a hard season does not rest on whoever happens to be most exposed. The Cell that has agreed in advance who covers whom does not have to negotiate it in the middle of the emergency.
Its inner form is what a person builds in themselves: the trained breath, the composure that holds when provoked, the capacity to remain oneself amid other wills. This is not armour against feeling. A shield that hardens a person against being reached has protected them from the people they were protecting.
Two cautions. A shield raised permanently becomes a wall, and a body behind a wall stops receiving what it needs. And shielding is not secrecy: reasoning stays visible and power stays accountable even while something fragile is being protected. What a shield keeps out is harm, not scrutiny.
