The Four Layers Of Shielding

Intentional · cultivated · Circle · Grid — four shields held as a stack, each with its own cost and duration, and all of them selectively permeable.

The intentional shield is held by conscious attention. It works, it works immediately, and it costs continuously — so it is the right instrument for an acute moment and the wrong one for sustained operation. Anyone relying on it as a baseline is spending everything they have on staying protected.

The cultivated shield is built into a person over years of practice and held by the alignment of the whole instrument rather than by attention. It demands little and is always on. This is what the daily disciplines actually produce, and it is why formation is described as the protection rather than as preparation for it (The Practice Cadence, The Warrior Is The Instrument).

The Circle shield is stronger than any individual's. A body that has practised together holds what none of its members holds alone, which is the first genuinely collective protection (Circle, The Circle's Shared Field, And How Circles Form, Shield).

The Grid shield is the same move at community, bioregional, and planetary scale (The Six Grid Disciplines, Planetary Light Grid).

The stack is the instrument. Hold the cultivated shield as baseline, layer the intentional one in the moment, and participate in the collective ones when the field calls for it. Anyone trying to do all of it with one layer is either exhausted or exposed.

And the governing rule, which is what keeps this from being armour: a wall blocks both what does not belong and what does. A shield is selectively permeable — what is in right relationship passes, what is not is turned (Selectively Permeable Membrane, Sovereignty In The Populated Field, Guard the Membrane). A person or body that has raised something nothing can enter has not achieved protection; they have achieved isolation, which is a different and lesser state.
