The Community Company

The self-governing body of one place — about ten thousand people — founded in six steps, with a charter of nine sections, and a stake and a voice for every member from the first day.

It is what a locality becomes when the people in it decide to govern and provide for themselves together rather than be administered. Ten thousand is not arbitrary: it is roughly the scale at which a place can hold its own economy, schooling, care, and food, and still be small enough that the people deciding are people you might meet (Community, Levels Of Scale, The 300).

Six steps found one. A steering committee of four to seven that knows it is scaffolding and dissolves its own founding authority. A legal form chosen from a ladder of tiers that begins at no formal structure at all. The first three percent engaged. The new way learned. The community engaged and the Flame passed. Its charter runs to nine sections, and among its seats are three that no ordinary company holds: a seat for living systems, a seat for future generations, and a seat for the Whole (The three seats, Charter, Covenant Across Time).

It is load-bearing because it is the rung where the Pattern meets law, land, and money. Below it a Cell can run on trust alone; at this scale a body owns things, employs people, and meets the old world's institutions — and needs a form that cannot be captured, sold, or hollowed out (The asset lock, FSx, Capital Subordinate To Purpose, Sovereignty At Every Scale).

Two disciplines are written into it from the start. Every member holds a stake and a voice not only in their own company but in the whole. And roles rotate, because A role held forever quietly becomes a throne (Term Limits And Rotation, Consent).

The earthly proof that it is possible is told with its wounds rather than as a triumph: a school preceded the cooperative by thirteen years, and when one of its great firms fell, the lenders were made whole before the worker-owners were.
