The Roll

The line each person signs when they enter the Game: name · date · word · brought-by · witnessed-by.

Nobody is governed who has not agreed, and silence is never a yes. The Roll is where the yes is written down. A person hears the Story, decides, and gives their word in their own words where others can hear it; then one line is added, and from that moment they are a Player — not appointed, not approved, not admitted. Entered.

Five things stand on the line and each carries its weight. The name is what they choose to be called; nobody is required to be known by more than that. The date places them in the Game's own time. The word is theirs — the actual sentence they said, not a checkbox that stood in for it. Brought-by is the Carrier, the person who handed them the Flame, and it never changes. Witnessed-by is whoever saw the word given, because a promise heard by no one is a wish (Brought-by · witnessed-by). Where a device can make one, a Signed key may be added so the line can be checked anywhere; where there is no device, two hands in a book are the whole of the security, and they are enough.

The Roll is the simplest instrument in the Game and among the most load-bearing, because it is what makes a body countable to itself without anyone being in charge of counting. It is kept by the Cell that holds the line, not by a centre; the lines gather upward by The Season Sheet and never leave the table that wrote them. Nothing on it is a credential — there is nothing to pass and no one to grant it (The Gate).

Leaving is written the same way it was entered. Anyone may go, in peace, at any time; the line stays, because nothing in the record is erased (The Way Out).
