The Warrior's Vow

What binds the one who may use force — spoken aloud, before witnesses, with a clause that says when it ends.

Strength without a vow is just strength. The vow is what makes a Warrior answerable: a statement, said out loud where others can hear it, of what the strength is for, whom it serves, and what it will never do. It is not a private resolution. The point of speaking it before witnesses is that other people now hold it, and can say when it has been broken.

Three things are in it. Allegiance — the strength serves ØNE and All, through the body the warrior stands with, and not whoever happens to be commanding. Limit — force is a last resort, and the minimum that restores Right Relationship; the warrior will refuse an order that crosses the line even when refusing costs. Terminal clause — the vow names the conditions under which the warrior stands down, hands back the authority, or ends the engagement. A commitment with no stated end quietly becomes a permanent power, which is the oldest way a guardian becomes a ruler.

The terminal clause is the part most easily skipped and most load-bearing. Everything else in the field carries one: authority is revocable, every decision has a review date, roles rotate because a role held forever becomes a throne. The vow is that same discipline applied to the one power that cannot be undone after it is used.

A vow spoken is also a vow that can be kept and broken visibly, which is what makes repair possible. A warrior who breaks it is confronted, heard, and brought back or removed until trust can be re-established — the same restorative path the body offers anyone, applied to the person whose failure costs most.
