Vow-Speaking
Saying it out loud, in your own words, where others can hear it. The word given aloud before witnesses is a different thing from the same word held privately.
A private intention can be revised silently and nobody is the poorer. A vow spoken before others enters the world: it can be remembered, relied on, and returned to. That is its whole function — not ceremony for its own sake, but the moment at which something becomes real enough for other people to build on.
The canon places it at every threshold that matters. At the door of the Game, the Invitation is accepted by saying yes in one's own words where others can hear it — aloud where there is aloud, written where the room is written; silence is never a yes, and nobody is governed who has not agreed. At the table each week, each person says what they will do, and a WILL is a person's word consciously given, never inferred. In the Plan, the asked-for thing is a given word: I will play. The Warrior's Vow is this Pattern at the weight a life can carry, with its own terminal clause.
Two things follow. Own words. A vow recited from someone else's script is the script's, not the speaker's; what is said in one's own words can be meant. Witness. Two signatures and a line count are the whole of the paper's security, and they are enough — because a word given before witnesses is held by relationship rather than by enforcement.
The other half of the Pattern is the keeping: a word given is a word kept, or a gap learned from, without blame. A Body that lets vows dissolve unremarked teaches that speaking them costs nothing, and after that nothing spoken there means much.
