Naming
A constitutive act: to name a thing is to bring it into shared existence, where it can be spoken of, agreed about, and worked on.
Before a thing has a name it can be felt but not handled. Two people who have both noticed it cannot check that they noticed the same thing; a Body cannot decide about it; nothing can be linked to it. Naming is therefore the first move of co-creation and not a label applied afterward — which is why the first shared act of a new Cell is giving itself a name, and why the naming begins in the first gathering rather than later.
The same act, done carelessly, does damage. A name claims an address, and in a living corpus the page standing at a name is the meaning of every link pointing there (Semantic Capture). A name given to a person or a group sticks and is hard to unstick. Naming a tension accurately is repair; naming a person as the tension is the beginning of a different kind of trouble.
The disciplines that keep it honest are held elsewhere and belong here. The name is a tool pointing at something real and never the thing itself (Word Tools). One working name per wisdom, the others honored as aliases. The shape of the name is a claim about what kind of thing it is (Naming Forms). And when two of us find we mean different things by a word, we fix the word rather than each other.
Naming is also how the unmapped becomes mappable. A concept the corpus lacks gets named as we cross it, linked before it is written, and paid for later (The Incipient Link). The honest naming of what is missing is itself part of the map.
