Gift
Freely offered contribution that increases life and strengthens the fabric of relationship.
A gift is value moved without a matching return and without a ledger entry demanding one. That is its whole difference from Exchange, and the difference is not sentimental: a trade closes a relationship (we are square, we need not meet again), while a gift opens one (something is outstanding between us, and what is outstanding is goodwill rather than debt). Bodies that run on gift move fast, because nothing waits for terms; bodies that run only on exchange are safe with strangers and slow with friends.
Gift is the older mode. Before markets there was the harvest shared, the barn raised, the neighbour fed — and the giving was not charity but the thing that bound a community to life and made the flourishing of all a practical proposition. The Pillar's narrative names the forgetting of this as the moment economics stopped being a sacred act. Restoring it is not nostalgia; it is restoring the mode in which most of what actually holds a world together has always moved.
Three cautions keep gift from curdling. It must be free — a gift extracted, expected, or socially compelled is a tax with better manners, and Consent governs here as everywhere. It must be recorded where it is a founding contribution, or it turns to resentment: the people who gave most at the start are the ones most reliably forgotten, which is why a founding ledger of unpaid hours and gifts advanced exists and why The waterfall repays it. And it must not be one-directional, or it becomes dependency; Reciprocity is the principle that keeps giver and receiver in the same body rather than on two sides of a counter.
At a Cell's table, gift has a fixed weekly form: The Offering, where each person puts in what is real for them and nobody sets the amount. Beyond the table it becomes Knowledge as commons — what one Circle learns, every Circle may have, for nothing.
