Structured record of what was observed, awaiting interpretation — the raw material of knowing, and never the knowing itself.

Data is what happened, written down. It is not information, which is data placed in a context; it is not knowledge, which is information a person can act on; and it is certainly not wisdom. Collapsing those levels is the characteristic error of an age that worships measurement: a number is treated as a verdict, and the far more important things that were never counted quietly stop existing.

Held in its place, data is indispensable. A body that does not record cannot learn, because it cannot tell the difference between what it believes about itself and what it actually did. That is the whole function of The Record: from every gathering, what was said, decided, and promised, in plain text anyone at the table can read and correct. What is owed is computed from the record rather than remembered, which is how nothing falls through and how nobody's memory becomes the authority.

Three disciplines keep data honest here. It carries its provenance — how it came to be, and who can reproduce it. It is legible to the people it is about, which means plain text and paper, not a system only a specialist can open. And it belongs to whoever generated it: a person's own hours, energy, and attention are recorded on their own card and go nowhere without their word.

The numbers a Cell actually needs are few and small: commitments made, commitments kept, kept as a share of made, flames passed, stories told, what was offered. That short list is enough to know the truth about a body, and short enough that keeping it never becomes the work.
