Measurement
The disciplined act of quantifying some aspect of Reality in order to see more clearly and steer more truly.
Measurement is a servant of alignment. Counted well, a few numbers show a body the difference between its intentions and its conduct, which is a thing no amount of sincerity can reveal. Counted badly, measurement becomes the most efficient way ever devised to optimize the wrong thing, because whatever is measured is what people will move toward.
Hence the rule that runs through the field: never a single-metric rule. A number informs a judgment; it does not replace one. Value is Throughput of the Goal, and throughput of the Goal is not fully countable, so the measures are chosen to see rather than to decide. The six capitals are counted together for exactly this reason — so that no body grows rich in money while going bankrupt in the things that mattered more.
What is actually measured at a table is short: commitments made, commitments kept, and kept as a share of made — the first number any group should know about itself. Then flames passed, stories told, what was gathered and where it went. These are legible to everyone present, cheap to keep, and hard to game without the gaming being visible.
Two further disciplines hold. Time is read, never computed: a clock is consulted before a time is written, and an estimate is said in words rather than dressed up as a number it has not earned. And measurement is done to the milestones — a marker missed has done its job the moment it makes reality visible, and the honest response is to say you are behind and replan, not to move the marker.
