Throughput

The rate at which the Goal of a system is actually accomplished — and the one measure of Value.

Throughput is the rate at which the Goal of a system is moved through the critical chain of its process and reaches the one it was for. Not activity. Not output. Not revenue. The thing itself, arriving.

Applied to the whole, it becomes Throughput of The Goal: every part optimises its activity to move the one overarching aim, which is the same as saying every part works to produce the greatest Value for All. This is the second big idea after the recognition that there is only one Goal, and it is what makes coordination between sovereign bodies possible without a central planner — each can ask, locally and honestly, whether what it is doing moves the shared thing.

It is load-bearing because it supplies the discipline that ordinary measures lack. Measured by activity, a body looks busiest just before it fails; measured by local optimisation, each part can improve while the whole degrades. Throughput refuses both: you cannot optimise the pieces and expect the whole to work, so you optimise the whole. Everything that does not move the Goal is Waste — not because it is lazy, but because it consumes the TimeEnergy and attention the real chain needed.

In play, throughput is why Quests are asked to stack up and align rather than merely be good; why the Critical Path is watched rather than the busiest workstream; and why the first number a group learns about itself is Kept as a share of made — reliability being the practical local proxy for whether anything is actually flowing.
