Keeper Without Keeping

No one keeps the Way, because what it flows from cannot be boxed up to be kept. The old titles are laid down so that all may take them up.

The argument is short. Wisdom and truth cannot be fully articulated into doctrine and bound up in an institution for a keeper to keep. They simply are. What can be done is to navigate relentlessly toward them while admitting they remain beyond the horizon of anyone's perception — and on an infinite journey there is always another step (Navigating Towards Truth, The Ineffable, Everything Is Current Best Understanding).

So the title cannot mean what it used to mean. In the old world the ways were kept and guarded by the authorities of their various houses, and in many cases the keepers would not even admit you to the place of practice. The canon's move is to lay the titles down — not to abolish them but to release them, so that all may take them up as a shared inheritance. Together, whoever are walking in this way, are its keepers (Keepers Of The Way, Knowledge as commons, Commons).

The release of the title is the access mechanism, and that is the load-bearing part. Knowledge does not become common by being declared common while the gate is still staffed. It becomes common when whoever held the standing sets it down, which is the one act that cannot be performed on anyone else's behalf (The Act Of Release, Pass The Flame, Recognitions Are Not Titles To Be Sought).

Two consequences are stated plainly. Schools requiring vows of secrecy are avoided by design — a way that cannot be shown is a way that has been kept (Transparency, Author's Voice Is Sovereign). And authority relocates rather than disappearing: each person is responsible for what they are entrusted with, answering to the centre rather than to a holder of the title (Sovereignty, Sovereignty At Every Scale, Servant Leadership).

What replaces keeping is tending. There is still craft, still formation, still someone further along; what there is not is a gate (Guide, Apprenticeship, Welcoming The Stranger).
