The HUD

The face of the Game a player reads without asking anyone — in two sides: the Doing and the Becoming.

The name is borrowed from the flier's instrument that keeps the essentials in view without anyone looking down. Seeing truly is a condition of playing well, because work that cannot be seen cannot be verified, joined, or passed on — and having to ask someone in order to know where you stand is how a body without a hierarchy accidentally grows one (Transparency, LIØNSBERG Mission Control).

The Doing side. Where we stand against the markers. The next few weeks — last week done, this week, and the weeks ahead — with every date computed rather than asserted. What is required of me. What waits on me. What we owe across our boundaries, and what is owed to us. What is in flight (The look-ahead, Work Deck, The Game Engine, The Commitment Tracker).

The Becoming side. The growth of the one reading it: where I stand on the path and its gates; the score the Game actually keeps — time and energy and attention invested, promises kept, value created, stories shared, flames passed; honour received; the balance of sleep, recreation and work; the condition I am bringing (The Sovereign Path, The 144 Gates of Initiation, The Score, LIØNSBERG Honor System, Condition).

The two are one instrument seen from two sides, and the Game is played well only when both are read. A body that reads only the Doing side produces and burns; one that reads only the Becoming side contemplates and delivers nothing (Doing, Becoming, The Reciprocal Opening of Being and Doing).

Its disciplines are three. The categories are durable — they change about as often as a body grows an organ, never with the week's fashion. The sources are the reader's own records, in plain text: the display shows them and never changes them. And every gauge says when it is stale, because an instrument that reads confidently from old data is worse than no instrument (Screens and paper, Data Date, The clock is read, never computed).

The floor is one file a person reads with no machine at all. Any Actor may keep its own, pointed at its own records.
