The Old Operating System
The behaviour beneath the institutions — the defaults people actually run, which rebuild the same world even after its buildings are replaced.
Replace a corrupt institution and watch its replacement acquire the same shape within a generation. That observation is what this name is for. The visible order is not the whole of the old world; underneath it is a set of defaults that run automatically in individuals, families, firms, and states, and it is the defaults that reproduce the order.
The distinction it draws is precise and useful. Kontrolle is the imposed architecture — built on top of people, foreign to them, maintained deliberately. The Old Operating System is the operative software — running through people, much of it absorbed over generations, some of it the residue of trauma, some of it survival programming that was once useful at small scale and is catastrophic at planetary scale. Remove the imposition and leave the defaults, and a people rebuilds its own cage; address the defaults and leave the imposition, and corruption is injected faster than it can be corrected. Both, or neither.
The defaults are nameable, which is what makes the concept workable rather than atmospheric: self-interested growth as the default mode, with the whole treated as an unowned commons; horizons no longer than the next cycle of budget or election; a picture of reality with no room for consciousness or the sacred; the human treated as separable from the living systems that carry it; coercion reached for whenever people must coordinate at scale; hierarchy assumed and fractal forms treated as exotic; domains siloed and never integrated; scarcity presumed; identity as tribal loyalty; authority attached to position rather than earned (Scarcity, Multi-Polar Traps, Silos No More, Centralization Of Power, Authority derived from responsibility).
The prescription follows directly. Hospicing the old world is not only dismantling its institutions; it is uninstalling these defaults in one body, one household, one Circle at a time — which takes seasons, not statements, because the defaults are patterned, rehearsed, and socially rewarded (The Three-Year Formation, Unlearning, The Practice Cadence). And it explains why a small proportion is enough to shift a culture: a person running noticeably less of it changes the room they are in (The First Three Percent, Demonstrate before advocating).
