Demonstrate before advocating
Build the thing first. The argument is the last resort of a movement with nothing to show.
The order matters more than either half. Advocacy that precedes demonstration has to persuade, and persuasion invites counter-persuasion, and the whole contest is decided by who argues better rather than by what is true. A thing that exists needs no such contest: people walk in, look, and judge for themselves (Prototype, Learning By Doing, Truth).
It is load-bearing because it is a discipline on ourselves rather than on the world. Arguing is cheap, immediate, and satisfying; building is slow and can fail visibly. A movement that has not committed to this order will always find the argument more urgent than the work, and will end up with a large audience and nothing to show them (The Movement, Waste, Attraction, not promotion).
It also decides what kind of body we become. A body organised to persuade organises around messaging, spokespeople, and enemies. A body organised to demonstrate organises around craft, evidence, and people who can actually do things. Those two bodies look similar at the start and are not remotely the same thing five years later (The Anti-Patterns, Institutional Idolatry).
The old proof of it is that nobody was ever talked into a new way of living. They saw one, close enough to touch, being lived by people they had reason to trust — a school before a cooperative, a working table before a manifesto — and then wanted it (Mondragon, Islands of Coherence, Share the Stories).
What follows the demonstration is not argument either. It is the story of what happened, told plainly, which travels further than any case ever made (Storytelling, Forward-Looking Story).
