Dying
The passage out — carried in the canon as a threshold to be accompanied rather than a medical event to be managed, and named as one of its largest gaps.
Every tradition that held a people together held its dying. The old ordering did not so much solve death as remove it: from the home to the institution, from the community to the specialists, from a passage with a shape into an outcome to be postponed. What is lost with it is not only dignity for the one leaving but formation for everyone else — a community that has never accompanied a death does not know what it can bear.
It is load-bearing because it is certain and because it is the test of whether a body of people is real. A Cell that runs seasons and quests for years will bury someone. The floor of care reaches its furthest point here: when a member is in danger, in body or in mind, the Circle acts first and records later, and no card is more important than the person at the table — which, at the end, means presence rather than rescue. The Way Out gives the leaving of a Circle its ordered form, and dying is the version of it nobody chooses.
In play, what the canon actually supplies is posture rather than rite. Do not isolate the dying; the village gathered. Accompany rather than manage. Let the community be present to what is happening rather than protected from it. Remembrance holds what must not be forgotten, and the lines of the one who has gone stay in the record — nothing erased. The naming of a death at the table, and the telling of that person's Story, is the smallest complete rite available to a Circle that has no other.
The canon is explicit that this is unwritten: dying, hospicing, death-midwifing, funerals, burial, mourning, and relationship with ancestors are all named as Patterns needed and not yet made. The rites of birth, coming of age, elderhood, and death are listed among the work no one has done. Whoever builds them builds them by walking one.
