Attraction, not promotion

Nobody is recruited. The Seed arrives through someone who trusts you, and you are free to say no.

It comes through a hand, not a broadcast. Someone who already knows you, and whom you have reason to trust, says come and see. If it resonates you say yes, in your own words, where others can hear it. If it does not, nothing whatever happens: no one is turned away, and no one is carried who has not chosen to walk (The Invitation, Pass The Flame, Carrier).

It is load-bearing for two reasons, and the second is less obvious than the first. The obvious one is consent: a thing you were persuaded into is a thing you can be persuaded out of, and a body built on persuasion has to keep persuading forever (Consent, Sovereignty, Mutual Consent).

The less obvious one is what promotion does to the promoter. A body that recruits begins to measure itself by numbers gathered, and then by attention captured, and then it needs a message that captures attention — and by then the message and the thing have quietly separated. Refusing promotion at the start is how a body keeps its own account of itself honest (The Anti-Patterns, The False Prophet, Demonstrate before advocating).

The lineage is old and worth naming: fellowships that healed people for a century held exactly this principle, and held it precisely because their substance was too easy to sell and too easy to counterfeit. What they found is that a thing which spreads only by attraction spreads more slowly and does not rot (Anti-Fragility, Structural Immunity).

Its practical shape is a discipline on the one passing it: tell the truth, give the whole of it, sit with them if they ask, and then let go. Their Cell is their own, not a branch of yours (Propagate; do not scale, The Flame).
