Forward-Looking Story
A telling whose centre of gravity is ahead — what we are going toward — as distinct from a backward-looking story, whose centre is behind.
Both kinds are real and both are needed. A backward-looking story explains where a people came from, what was done to them, and what was lost; without it there is no identity and no honest reckoning. A forward-looking story says where they are going and what it will be like when they get there. The trouble is the ratio. Billions of backward-looking stories and almost no shared forward-looking one is a fair description of the present hour, and a people with only a past organizes around grievance, because grievance is the only thing a shared past reliably supplies.
It is load-bearing because it is what a Vision actually is in practice. Every Circle is asked how would you like the world to be? and crafts from the answers a shared picture of what Heaven looks like, feels like, tastes like, right where they are. That is a forward-looking story built by the people who will have to live in it, and it does the work no plan does: it makes a hard season bearable and tells a member what they are for.
In play the discipline is that a forward story earns its credibility from Testimony. A picture of the future with nothing achieved behind it is wishing. A picture with one real garden, one kept season, one Kept as a share of made number that improved, is a prophecy on evidence — which is the canon's exact claim, that every true story is a prophecy of something greater that is possible. This is why Storytelling sits after Celebrate, Learn, and Improve: the forward story is assembled out of what was actually done.
Two cautions. A forward story must be falsifiable enough to be checked against what happens, or it becomes the work of The False Prophet — liberation language in service of something else. And it must not erase the backward one: a people told to look only ahead has been asked to forget what it survived.
