Harvest and Close
How a gathering ends so that the value is kept: what we are learning, one appreciation or improvement each, thanks, a closing word — on time.
The last movement of The Turn, and the one most often lost to the clock. Harvesting asks the table what it is learning, while the gathering is still in the room. Closing marks the end: a round of gratitude, a word, and the hour honoured. End on time, because trust is built at the edges — a table that reliably finishes when it said it would is a table people can commit to.
It is load-bearing because a gathering that does not harvest leaves its learning in the heads of whoever happened to notice. One line, said aloud and written on The Circle's Scorecard, is what turns an evening into something the body can use; that line is the seed of the season's Story and of any Proposal the table will send up. Closing in gratitude is not sentiment either: Gratitude is a practice, and a body that only ever names what is missing wears its people out.
How it is played. Ask what we are learning and take one line. Then each person offers either one appreciation or one improvement — naming a person for a good thing, or naming a thing that would make next week better. Close with thanks and a word that sends people out. Anything unfinished goes on the cards, not into an extra half hour. Then the cards are updated and the record is closed for the week. At a turning, this movement widens into OmniSpection and the counting of the season.
