Wise Eldership

Discernment held by those who have walked further — wisdom-based, not age-based, and sought because it is trusted rather than because it is in charge.

An elder in this sense holds no office by virtue of being one. Their counsel is sought not because they hold power but because they have earned trust: they have been further along the road, made the mistakes, and can see a season ahead of the people asking. That is a different kind of standing from authority, and keeping the two apart is what makes eldership safe.

It is load-bearing as the counterweight inside Democratic Self-Governance Through Shared Agreements and Wise Eldership. Equal voice alone produces the tyranny of the majority — a body that is always as wise as its median member on its worst week. Elders alone produce the tyranny of the few. The two together give a body both legitimacy and memory.

Its practical rule is where stalled consent goes. When a Circle cannot resolve a Proposal, it does not escalate to a boss; it goes to the elders for counsel — and comes back with counsel, which the body still weighs and decides. The canon's other guard is that eldership is wisdom-based, not age-based: years help and do not qualify, and a young member who has walked a particular road further is the elder for that question.

In play a Cell usually has no formal elders in its first season and should not invent them. It meets eldership as a person outside the deadlock whose judgment both sides trust — and later, if it grows, as a Wisdom Council reaffirmed every ninety days.
