Bioregion
A life-place: a continuous territory where the natural systems and the cultures grown out of them are inseparable — the scale at which place meets people.
A bioregion is larger than any single Watershed and smaller than a continent. It is distinct from a political unit, which was imposed on the land, and distinct from an Ecoregion, which is a finer-grained scientific classification. It is the integrative scale: where soil and water, plant and creature, The Sovereign and Circle, language and song are most directly held together. Roughly one hundred fifty to two hundred of them across the Earth, depending on where the cultural-ecological lines are drawn. Cascadia is one. The Klamath-Siskiyou is one. Many indigenous nations were already organized at this scale.
It is load-bearing because it is a rung of the ladder by which the Whole is composed without a centre. Community bodies federate into Ecoregions, which share an ecological substrate; Ecoregions federate into Bioregions, which integrate several ecologies and the cultures shaped by them; Bioregions nest onward toward the planet. Each Bioregion may contain several Ecoregions; each Ecoregion many Communities; each Community anchored by its own The 300. This is what Holofractal Omnifederation looks like when it touches actual ground.
In play, the bioregion carries the place-based half of sovereignty while a Guild carries the craft-based half — rooted in a specific land, rooted in a specific practice across many lands. Both are needed; neither is sufficient. At the bioregional scale sits the coordinated stewardship no single Community can do alone: the watersheds, the soils, the relatives of the land, the long arcs of place-care.
The invitation is plain and is the whole practice: return to the land that holds you. Learn its watersheds, its winds, its seasons, its kin. Practise The Way where you actually live. A Cell can begin this in its first season without permission from anyone, and the knowledge it gathers is the ground every later federation stands on.
